a guy?

I'm not sure if it's me or the picture, but the princess really looks like a guy to me (face, hands size, even chest at some extend)... else don't get me wrong, it's very good !

I think for the face, the eyes are too small, nose is too big, chin is too big, chin skin should be less saturated or something, more feminized lips... but the features are at the right place..

just my 2 cents buddy, nice work!

just dont tell the model I used to draw from, or she will be quite upset with you, believe it or nor, she is real and does look like this. analysing art is always great, but mocking how the figure looks judging by thier stature isnt fair, she is supposed to look like a middle aged woman of the 13th century, she is not a princess and is not supposed to look like a hollywood babe. your reviews should be a little less speculative next time chap :)

Good

From another Maya student, here is what I think..

Overall scene: lack geometry resolution. It looks almost everything is a primitive or primitives with boolean. Try putting some bevel here and there at least.

Shot: If this is in a film, you would need to adjust it to the shot. For example put alot more resolution geometry and texture wise on the door near the camera. The camera angle is nice tho.

Shadows. You don't have much of an excuse not to use them, almost just a check box! Overall lighting is a bit odd too.. should come from the ceiling since it's a submarine? it looks much more like a boat, I don't think submarine have windows (real one I mean)..

Nice bumpy-rusty texture (you might want to add specular map on this, for extra cool effect), good job, keep learning man.. maya is a very powerful tool!

cheers!

danomano65 responds:

hey thanks. yeah i was messing with lights at 2am. we haven't done lighting in class yet so this was all trial and error. i added shadows a little bit after i posted this online lol. but i'll take your suggestions.

wtf is this?

no really, good stuff practicing on the nude, but gee at least keep the bad ones for yourself... : /

really odd to cut a model like that, either you don't have a digital camera (yeah, screw that small scanner please), or it really isn't properly framed.

that breast line connecting to the back really breaks the model, same for the leg one. proportion overall weird..

insane resolution, useless

this is practice, it has no place here, except if it would feel finished

sorry for the flaming, just get us some more polished stuff to look at

cheers : )

pupart responds:

I like to be criticize... but with meaning, not meaningless. with meaning, i can improve my art.. but thanks for dropping by...

Very Giger

I was really impressed at first (like OMG this guy is a friggin god), because I have seen some of Giger's work, and it immediately had that Giger's feel, plus the painting was really saying something strong. But then I googled a bit and found it was just a plain copy of one of Giger's work.. it's a shame. I really wished you used his style, but in your own creation.. : )

Technique is really good, framing too! (in fact I think giger version is worse cause you nailed the framing really well) if it was 100% your stuff (even in giger's style) you would really be one hell of an artist, PLEASE try harder, your work is really good.

Lemmiwinks91 responds:

Haha. Well i had to do a contexual study for A level art so i did mine on giger. A lot of people printed of pictures to use but i decided to paint mine thats why its a direct copy, which i agree is a shame but i havn't done much oil painting for a while, but i want to get back into it over summer.

I will probably design my own piece and put as much detail in as this. Thanks though, i don't deserve that much credit for this tbh.

about crappy rendering..

Well, maybe you need to soften the face normals, if you have blocky polygon feeling in your render? Shouldn't need to soften them in photoshop.. don't know much about blender but you should look into face or edge normals, how to change them.. every 3d package can modify them.

Good luck!

JoSilver responds:

good to know... now... where might i find that be I wonder...

I ONLY KNOW AUTOCAD =S

Nice!

Something wrong with the proportions.. the hands and arms are too big, legs near bottom of picture kinda gets too small.. dunno

Good stuff.. ^_^

Darth-Spanky responds:

Yeah...I have to fix that in the colored version. Thanks.

Need more work, but still pretty good!

Sorry if I'm a bit too harsh on ya, hope it'll help.

-first thing that strikes is a mirror water surface, put some waves (might not be easy but especially when there is high reflection this is important). The image uses a realistic look, and mirror surface like this with huge black clouds on top doesn't make any sense. If this was intended then forget about my comment.. : )

-The rocky surface on the island (brown rocks) is badly mapped (the uv map) or the resolution of your texture is too low, I can "see" the texture stretch and end

-The water has a red-green-blue kinda video noise texture on it, feels a bit weird.

On a final note, yes, there is good stuff in your image, the matte painting is great, it's a nice idea too. Just a bit more work and it's going to be a 10.. ^_^

Keep up the good work!

Funkyfists responds:

I don't think you were toooooo harsh... lol.
I guess i didn't think about the storm affecting the sea... Oh well... i used anim8or which doesn't actually do reflections. So i had to simulate it which wouldn't have worked if i had waves. Oh well, ill fix up the texture, thanks for the review!
